Pro Tips For Painting The Exterior of Your House

We all know the importance of a good paint job. It's not just about aesthetics, it can also be about improving your home's energy efficiency and value. Whether you are looking to freshen up your exterior or change the colour completely, this guide will help you choose colours that match your surroundings and give you tips on how to get the best possible results when painting your house from the top to the bottom.

How long does an exterior house painting job last?
That depends on the type of paint you use, how often it rains in your area and whether or not there is a lot of sun. In general though, painting once every five years should be enough to ensure that your house looks good for many more years.

Exterior house painting is not just about aesthetics, it can also be about improving your home's energy efficiency and value. Whether you are looking to freshen up your exterior or change the colour completely, you should choose colours that match your surroundings.

What affects exterior paint colours?
Exterior colours are affected by what surrounds them: neighbours' houses, trees, parking lots etc. It's best to choose an earth tone colour palette and try out different shades until you find one that matches your surroundings well.

Painting the trim around windows and doors will also help with matching those specific areas as they tend to stand out against their surroundings even more than walls do because of their vertical nature. Experimenting with complementary colours will also help to ensure that your house looks good against the surrounding environment.

What would be a good Temperature For Exterior House Painting?
In general, temperatures should be at least 10 degrees Celsius outside before starting any exterior house painting project as latex paint doesn't set up well in cold weather. Colder temperatures also make the drying process take longer which can lead to streaking, sags, and other issues that need correcting later on down the road when it's warmer out.

The good news is if you do start an exterior paint job during these colder months there are ways to speed things along including using heat lamps and adding additives like wood grain alcohols.

It doesn't matter what the ambient air temperature is outside as long as your home hasn't reached its maximum capacity when you start spraying or brushing which would cause issues with moisture levels inside.

Whatever temperature you choose, make sure the exterior paint is suitable to withstand rain, humidity, snow or ice and heat from the summer sun. You don't want your paint job getting ruined because of a misread label. Here's what should be looked for when choosing an exterior house painting:
  • A high quality outdoor rated primer-sealer
  • Acrylic/latex topcoat made with acrylic binders
  • Paint specifically formulated

Is It Better To Spray Or Brush Paint A House?
The choice of paint technique, either spraying or brushing is a personal preference and will depend on the type of surface you are working with and also what types of tools (i.e., brushes) that you have available to do the job. Brush painting for instance often takes less time than spraying but can sometimes be more expensive depending on which primer or paint combo one uses per gallon.

You'll find most professionals prefer spraying because they can do faster work and have fewer fumes while also cleaning up quicker since there isn't any mess from brushes to clean off afterwards although some people argue that brushing over doors, windowsills etc. gives them cleaner lines where the paint is applied.

While painting with brushes takes more time per square foot, it also has its advantages. You have more control with a brush and can cover your surfaces better than if you were using spray paint which may leave streaks in some cases.

What Is The Going Rate To Paint The Exterior Of A House?
The going rate to paint an entire house in the UK is around £2000 without any additional work like caulking (which can cost anywhere from £100 to a thousand pounds). That price includes all materials plus labour so if you have someone come out to do it then they'll also charge an hourly fee of around £16 per hour on top of material costs.

For exterior house painting do you need one or two coats?
Usually, homes are painted with a single coat of paint which is enough to cover the exterior using just regular old latex paint but for more intense levels of protection and quality, you might want to consider going with a double layer as it will generally provide better coverage than what's available in just a single coat alone (although that does come at an increased cost).
Two coats will usually provide superior protection and quality.

How Long Does Exterior House Painting Last?
A properly applied coat of high-quality latex or acrylic will last for at least two years if maintained correctly with proper materials like primer and sealant that have been prepped according to manufacturer specifications.

Exterior House Painting In Cold Weather
If temperatures are below 4 degrees Celsius outside, we recommend waiting until warmer weather before starting any exterior house painting project because cold temps make everything go slower (including drying) and makes cleaning-up harder due to the paint's viscosity.

Exterior House Painting In Hot Weather
If temperatures are above 37 degrees Celsius outside, we recommend waiting until it cools off before starting any exterior house painting project because hot temps make everything go slower (including drying) and makes cleaning-up harder due to the paint's viscosity.

You want an exterior house painting job done right?
It is always best to hire a professional for an exterior house painting job. For the average home, this service will typically cost around £2500 and should take about two weeks or less. However, other factors can determine how much your project costs so be sure to ask the contractor what those could be before making any decisions on whether to go the DIY route.

You should also think about getting some advice from a professional painter before going ahead with your project because there is a lot to consider when deciding on the appropriate method that best suits your needs.

It may not seem like it at first but choosing between methods such as spray vs brush has a lot of factors involved (such as durability) so make sure to do all the research beforehand.
